Baths and Circuses

Your guide brings to life the world of Imperial Rome as we visit some of the most impressive sites of the games, races, theaters, baths and temples, revealing just how advanced society was two thousand years ago! Witness one of the largest bath houses in Rome and learn about what it was like to bathe there. See the site of the largest stadium created in the Ancient World and find out just how wild the games were.

We also visit two of the oldest standing temples in Rome, and the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin with the famous Mouth of Truth. Entering the Jewish Ghetto we will see the impressive remains of the Theater of Marcellus and the Portico of Octavia. We end the tour at the only island in Rome, the lovely Tiber Island (which was once disguised as a ship!) with views of the Tiber River and graced by a delicious gelateria. This three hour tour includes the Baths of Caracalla, the Circus Maximus, the Temple of Portuna, the Temple of Hercules Victor, the Arch of Janus, Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Mouth of Truth, the Theater of Marcellus, the Portico of Octavia and the Tiber Island.

This unique tour is for those who want to expand their understanding of how our culture came to be as it is today. Digging back through the layers of both ancient and modern Christian tradition, your guide will unearth for you our pagan roots. Rome is perhaps the only place on earth in which one can simultaneously view the religious and spiritual traditions of the last 2800 years stacked one atop another. The Roman Empire in the first centuries after Christ was a place in which many faiths competed for the hearts and minds of the people. In the end, the Christians won this spiritual battle, or did they? Discover how the pagan mind returned to medieval Rome, gave birth to the Renaissance, and shook the Church's very foundations.

Your guide will take you around the city in a highly specialized and enthralling tour of religious traditions starting with the Vatican City and then exploring the Ancient City, examining how the soul of man still speaks through its art and architecture across the centuries.

Mid-day we stop for a delicious Italian meal in a restaurant selected by our staff for its authentic Roman cuisine.
