Jewish Ghetto

The histories of Rome and the Jewish people are forever intertwined. Of all those conquered by the Empire, Jews remain the only distinct ethnic group still found in modern day Rome. Romans themselves often say that the city's most authentic residents are the Jews of the Ghetto. Their history is unique to the world: It boasts the longest lasting, uninterrupted, Jewish community on the planet.
Today the ghetto is a lively, animated, and popular section of Rome's Historical center where native Romans themselves come to savor the city's most authentic cuisine. It also contains a number of uniquely beautiful monuments and a present-day community which far from dwindling is instead thriving.
Understanding and experiencing the Jewish ghetto is one of the keys to understanding Rome's history and the roots from which Christianity grew.

Caravaggio Masterpieces

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - the other Michelangelo - was one of the most dynamic men to ever traipse through history. He was a rebel, drunkard and gambler, a dueler, outlaw and murderer, but he was also a revolutionary painter whose techniques of hyper-realism and chiaroscuro changed the way we see the world.

At the turn of the 17th century, Rome with its Counter-Reformation Vatican and rich, ambitious patrons was the place for aspiring artists. Caravaggio arrived unknown and penniless to eventually spend 14 illustrious years, hitting the heights of his career. He skirted between life on the streets and life among intellectuals and aristocrats who were pushing the boundaries of science, culture and discovery in the wake of the Renaissance. Caravaggio's precarious balancing act was doomed from the start, with controversy dogging him through the years, until the pronouncement of a death sentence forced him to run for his life.

While leading you through the narrow, winding streets of Rome’s historic center, we'll take you to the many churches for which his work was commissioned and in which centuries later it still resides. We also show you where Caravaggio lived, worked and fought as we discuss his unprecedented visual technique and its relation to his violent tendencies, ambiguous sexuality and powerful spiritual expression.

During the tour we treat you to at least six Caravaggio masterpieces and up to eighteen in an extended tour that includes museums (please inquire). By the end of the tour, you will fully understand how Caravaggio’s edgy existence in Rome directly influenced the monumental and breathtaking paintings we are still privileged to see today.
