Rome is filled with museums, and like everything else about the Eternal city, they range from the interesting to the extraordinary. Here we propose two of the very finest, the Museo Borghese, known as the "Queen of Museums" for the combination of its small size and exquisite collection, and the Capitoline, for its unparalleled collection of ancient statues.

Villa Borghese

A gem of antique, Renaissance and Baroque art originally founded in the 1600’s by the ruthless and irreligious nephew of the Pope, Cardinal Scipione Borghese, this small museum is filled with work of astonishing quality.

Masterpiece works by Raphael, Perugino and Caravaggio vie with those of Bernini, Correggio and Canova. Every nook and cranny of this delicate palazzo is decorated with the finest work of the Renaissance and Baroque.

Scipione’s fascination with pagan antiquities, a theme carried into the work of Renaissance artists, led him to become the patron of Bernini who created such sculptures that in their delicacy defy the very nature of stone. In addition, there is Canova's famous semi-nude of the beautiful and notorious Pauline Bonaparte, fine sculpture from Imperial Rome, and a delightful Pinacoteca. The Roman floor mosaics complete the effect, a highlight being the series of Roman gladiator’s portraits and names.

Located in the splendid Villa Borghese amidst the former grounds of Pope Paul V's "country home" this is one of the treasures of Rome not to be missed!

Cost of this three hour tour is 220 Euros*
Entrance fees: 8.50 Euros per person (closed Mondays).
Note: Reservations must be made in advance for this museum so please book as early as possible!

Capitoline

One of the finest museums in Rome, the Capitoline holds a stunning collection of antique sculpture as well as Renaissance and Baroque painting. Some of the highlights of the collection are the incredibly rare bronze Equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the bronze Etruscan she-wolf with Romulus and Remus and the myth-shrouded antic bronze of the "Spinario", a tender statue of a boy pulling a thorn from his foot.

Not to be missed are the colossal marble head, hand, arm and foot of Constantine. Also on view are the famous marble centaurs, the dancing faun, the busts of numerous Emperors, the statue of Venus, and the Dying Gaul.

You will also tour an evocative underground gallery that exposes the ancient remains of temples dating back to the 6th century BCE, with a magnificent "secret" view over the forum.

Entrance fees: 6.50 - 8.50 Euros depending on current exhibitions. (closed Mondays)
